CINE SIN LIMITES: CLAUDIO CALDINI, JORGE HONIK AND NARCISA HIRSCH

We invite everyone to the film series Cine sin limites: Claudio Caldini, Jorge Honik and Narcisa Hirsch, which will take place May 4th-14th at the Centro Cultural São Paulo (CCSP). The series offers 70 short films, the majority of which are previously unscreened in Brazil, and the sum of which celebrates the work of three fundamental Argentinian experimental filmmakers.

Between the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1980s, a group of filmmakers met regularly in Buenos Aires to share their works. They filmed primarily in 8mm and in Super 8, and they were influenced in their practices by the films of North American and Western European artists such as Michael Snow and Werner Nekes. Three in particular became key figures of this movement, which gave shape to a tradition of Argentinian experimental cinema.

Claudio Caldini is an artist and theorist who creates images of extraordinary beauty by seeking to surpass the limits of human consciousness through connecting with the surrounding natural world. The renowned prose writer and theater artist Jorge Honik, despite possessing only a small body of films, has compiled a set of free and pleasurable cinematic chronicles that has only recently begun to gain international exposure. The German émigré Narcisa Hirsch offers a deeply personal style, one in which she shares her preoccupations with spectators through a series of short autobiographical films that play between truth and fiction.

The series Cine sin limites: Claudio Caldini, Jorge Honik and Narcisa Hirsch will offer films screened both in Super-8 and in digital formats. The screening copies have all been provided by the filmmakers, save for recently remastered digital versions of Caldini and Honik's films, which have been provided by the boutique label antennae collection.

The series will also feature, as guests, the three filmmakers and Daniela Muttis, who in addition to being Hirsch's assistant, has edited several of her films. In keeping with the greater history of Argentinian experimental film, the series will additionally screen seven films from other Argentinian directors that dialogue with the works of the directors in focus.

The series Cine sin limites: Claudio Caldini, Jorge Honik and Narcisa Hirsch has been realized by the Centro Cultural São Paulo and by the Prefecture of São Paulo, and has been curated and produced by Aaron Cutler and Mariana Shellard.
